Carrollton Trails 5k-Mile Fun Run
On May 19, 2012, I ran in the Carrollton Trails 5K-Mile Fun Run at Blue Trail, Carrollton, TX. The race was sponsored by Baylor Hospital and was created to promote the trail and to get residents of the city to start an exercise program. Ruben Sequil, director of the Carrollton Runners Club, along with some club volunteers helped keep everything organized. One of the cool things about this race is that runners can use same club bib # to sign up for the 2 dollar club races. This was an unusual race as we parked by a school to pick up our race packet, then were bused to the starting line, finally we finished this downhill race in another location. After the race you had the option to walk the 1K or wait on the buses to take you back to parking area. My family and I decided to walk back rather than waiting for the buses. It was 72 degrees and cloudy with a 15 mph wind in our face at the 8:07 am 5K start. The age groups were split out for every 10 years instead of the usual 5 year categories. David Mask, one of my chief rivals, just turn 60 years old and was in the same age group as I was. He and I or members of the Carrollton Runners Club and have run against each other many times. He is faster than I am so I was hoping for 2nd place but I would have to finish ahead of another good runner, Bill Shirley 68 who is also faster than I am but he was nursing an injury. We ran a little over a quarter mile before we entered the trail. Shortly after I finished the race my son John and his family arrived. They had bused to the mile fun run instead of our 5K finish line and only took a couple of pictures. I finished in 2nd place out of 14 with a time of 25;23. Overall, I finished 30 out of 135 Men and 33 out of 336 total timed runners. My pace was 8;10 and I had a 63.2 age grade. I will start the 15K long distance training classes at Run-on next week. I look forward to the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge race September 22, sponsored by USMD Prostate Cancer Center. I hope you will join me there. I took a picture with fellow Carrollton Runners Club Members Julio Lopez 56, and Doug Waters, who both ran the Boston Marathon in one of its hottest races ever. Place Age Bib# Men Overall Overall Time Pace Age grade 2/14 60 237 30/135 33/336 25:23 8;10 63.2 I run to raise awareness for prostate cancer and to benefit my community. www.runningforacause.tumblr.com |
