A Runner for a Cause

Teddy Viator, 58, was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in June, 2007. Dr. Justin Lee, one of USMD Prostate Cancer Center's leading physicians and robotic surgeons, performed a robotic prostatectomy on Teddy the following September. After surgery, Dr. Lee strongly urged Teddy to begin an exercise program to help with the process of healing and returning to a normal lifestyle.

After training on elliptical machines and treadmills, Teddy runs a number of 5k races around the DFW metroplex and has completed 18 races since September, 2009.

Teddy's Story

"I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer on June 6, 2007. At that time I was naturally worried that my life was in serious danger. Considering the fact that I was already diagnosed with Diabetes, had a Pace Maker, and was overweight...things were not looking good for me.

"I had my Robotic Prostate surgery September of 2007 at the USMD Prostate Cancer Center in Arlington Texas. My Doctor, Justin Lee, has done over 1000 Robotic Prostate Surgeries and is considered to be one of the very best surgeons in the DFW area.

"After my surgery, Dr. Lee recommended that i strongly consider starting an exercise program. At first I did not believe that I would be able to do enough exercise to really make a difference, but I took his advise anyways. He referred me to the Cancer Foundation for Life. It's a free program for cancer patients and their caregivers or spouses.

"I have been exercising there for the past 18 months and I feel great. In the beginning, I was in such bad shape that I could not use the treadmill because they thought I would fall and hurt myself. Instead, I used the elliptical machine. I started out slowly at the lowest settings and gradually went up from there. In no time I was actually jogging on the treadmill without holding the rails.

"I eventually volunteered for the DadsFest 5k, sponsored by Texas Health Systems. I volunteered for about 2 years but never ran in the race until one day I made the decision that I wanted to try to get in shape and run in the next DadsFest race in July 2010."

About Robotic Surgery at USMD Prostate Cancer Center

The team at USMDPCC is committed to providing a wide variety of leading edge prostate cancer treatment options for our patients, including the latest breakthroughs in nerve-sparing robotic surgical techniques.

Robotic surgery for prostate cancer is a minimally invasive procedure that allows our expert surgeons to treat prostate cancer with numerous benefits to our patients, including reduced scarring, trauma and pain, rapid recovery and shorter hospital stays. Compared to traditional surgical methods, which utilize large incisions, robotic surgery is performed through a variety of smaller incisions that are less traumatic to our patients. Recovery time is much shorter due to reduced tissue damage, resulting in shorter hospital stays compared to conventional surgery methods. Ultimately, our patients are afforded a faster overall recuperation and can quickly resume normal activities.

The USMDPCC team features the da Vinci® Robotic Surgery System, the most advanced robotic treatment method for prostate cancer. The enhanced precision and control of the da Vinci System paired with the expert knowledge of our world-renowned surgeons offers an unsurpassed treatment method for a traditionally complex surgical procedure.

The da Vinci System allows our surgeons to extend their expertise and utilize the following technological elements for our patients:

• Enhanced 3D analysis of the surgical area
• Improved dexterity
• Enhanced surgical precision
• Amplified range of motion

The minimally invasive nature of the da Vinci System allows a variety of benefits to our patients at USMDPCC, including:

• Nerve-sparing techniques used to retain erectile function
• Reduced post-operative pain
• Reduced risk of infection
• Lower concentration of anesthesia
• Less potential blood loss
• Shorter hospital stay
• Quicker and more complete recovery
• More rapid return to everyday activities

These benefits cannot be guaranteed, and your surgeon will discuss all potential benefits and risks with you before your procedure. Remember, the da Vinci System is an advanced instrument that allows your surgeon to perform your procedure with added accuracy and precision. The robot is not in control of the procedure, rather your surgeon controls all aspects of your treatment utilizing the da Vinci System.
