This past weeks race on July 3rd was the Liberty 5k at Stewarts Creek Park in The Colony. The location of the race was very far from my house, and so I had to wake up extra early for the event. I was almost there when I realized that I hadn't packed my running shirt. Instead, I had to run in the shirt that was provided in the registration pack. As usual, I checked out some of the sponsor booths before the race, stretched, and did some light running before the race started. There was a fun run before the 5k event, so I watched that while waiting for my race to start. It had rained the night before and the humidity was so bad that I was sweating just standing there watching the fun run. I started about 4 rows back at the start. My oldest son, John and his family were there to cheer me on. I didn't see them before the race, but there they were when I got lined up for the start. It had been 2 weeks since my last race (Dadfest 5K) and I guess I was a little out of shape. I started getting tired earlier than usual. At the 1 mile marker there was a man calling out the time; I made it at 9 minutes flat. There was another guy doing the same thing at the 2 mile marker. At that point, my time was 18:25. If my son hadn't shown up I wouldn't have tried so hard the rest of the race. I knew I was alot slower than my usual pace, so I sped up as much as I could for the end of the race. My son and his family were waiting for me at the finish, so I wanted to end the race strong. I was totally drained of energy at that point, but did my best. After the race, there was plenty of drinks and food. I checked out my results and found out that I had finished 3rd place by 1 second. I received a cool award trophy, then spent the rest of the day visiting with my son at his house. Later that night I went to the Texas Rangers baseball game and saw an excellent fireworks display. It was another busy day. My final line male 55-59: Place Men Overall M/F Age Bib Finish Chip Time Gun Time Pace 3/7 107/222 157/506 M 58 48 28:15:00 28:15:00 28:16:00 9:05 |
